Retaining Walls Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio
Saving Your Landscape from Subsurface Water Pressure
Retaining walls serve to retain lateral pressure from soil. The most important consideration in designing and installing a retaining wall is to recognize that the retained material (the earth) is attempting to move downslope due to gravity.
Lateral pressures are typically smallest at the top of the wall and increase toward the bottom. Any ground water behind the wall that is not dispersed by a drainage system will cause additional pressure on the wall. Proper drainage behind the wall is critical to the wall’s performance.
